Custom portrait painting
If you like my work and would like to have a painting of yourself or someone else (or multiple people), you can order a custom portrait painting. The portraits can be just faces, or a bit more of the body as well, according to your wishes.
Options and prices
The standard canvases I use are French sizes, but in theory I could use any commercially available size of canvas. You can choose a painting containing one or multiple people, but to ensure the quality of the painting, I have a maximum amount of people per canvas size. If you are unsure, can recommend a size or shape if you have specific wishes.
The paintings will be made with acrylic paint on a stretched cotton canvas. Note: the following are the prices for a painting of just figures with no or very little details in the background. If you have specific wishes we can discuss together and I will make a tailored quote for you.

The process of a custom painting
So, you have decided you want a painting! Lovely. What’s next? You can send me an email (hi@gwenvanhouwelingen.com) and tell me your wishes for the painting. We’ll start with a videocall to chat a bit about your wishes and expectations. During this conversation I will also make a composition sketch to roughly indicate what your painting is going to look like. If there’s a specific photo that you would like to be turned into a painting, in some cases this is also possible. I’d be happy to discuss the possibilities with you, feel free to send me an email with any questions you might have at hi@gwenvanhouwelingen.com.
Ideally, I would like to meet the people that I will be painting, and take pictures myself. Depending on where you are located and the timeframe, we can arrange a meeting. Otherwise, I will send you some instructions on photos and/or videos to take.
Normally it will take at least 2-4 weeks to complete a painting, depending on different factors such as the subject, the size and my availability.
Agreement & payment
After we had our conversation and agreed upon your wishes, I will send you an email with the details, shipping costs for the specific size of your painting and the timeframe. You can still decide to opt-out after that, or if you agree I will send you the official contract. You will pay a 50% deposit upfront. Once the painting is completed and you are happy with the final result, you pay the remaining 50% and once I received the payment, the painting will be shipped to your address.
If you have the opportunity, it is also possible to personally pick up the painting from my studio in France. You could even book a stay at our guesthouse Le Val de la Bonne Vie and make it a little holiday!
